Improving students'
academic skills
Constructing our own knowledge is a life-long process. Many of our students have developed habits in pursuit of the cognitive tasks that support this process. But the better student will also have wrestled with metacognition, an individual's ability to monitor, self-regulate, and improve cognition. The Learning Center offers several resources to help students develop their academic skills in meaningful, reflective ways that are informed by the needs for both cognition and metacognition.
Our staff work individually with students who wish to develop and execute an Individual Action Plan for improving their learning skills. Goal-based actions are developed as well as the means to assess their effectiveness.
The Learning Center provides a series of seminars each semester. These seminars, offered twice weekly, promote academic strategies. These discussions are supported by online resources for improving learning skills.
Quinnipiac's nationally-certified Peer Tutoring Program supports many classes. Students work individually with a peer tutor who has earned an A or an A- in the course being supported. Peer tutors also undergo significant training to help them offer support in an appropriate manner.
